Applying for a Job
There are so many recruiters out there! How am I supposed to choose one?Basically, you want to be dealing with a recruiter who has your interests in mind. Finding a recruiter who is experienced, knowledgeable and prompt in replying to your requests is important. You want to go through someone who will always have the time to respond to your requests or urgencies. Ask them for an email address or phone number of someone they've placed through their agency. This way you can get it straight from the horse's mouth. Every school that wishes to hire a teacher through Go East Recruiting must go through a very thorough screening process with us. This includes us contacting current and previous teachers at the school and, whenever possible, we will personally visit the school and director to verify the information they have given us. If ever we find that information is incorrect or an employer isn't operating up to our standards, we will not represent them. Our goal is to provide you with as much reassurance as we can to help you make very comfortable decisions in where you choose to work. How do I apply for a job?To apply with us, you'll need to email your resume, a recent photo of yourself (or two) and the date you are available to start to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Include any other information or special requests in your email. We are working on putting an online application form on the website, but for now, this method works just as well. Do I need certification to teach? No, you don't need any. Although, having certification will likely get you a slightly bigger salary, as will some experience in teaching ESL. Jobs in public schools (high schools, universities, government supported schools) sometimes require certification in TESOL, TEFL, TESL, or CELTA but not always. Speak to us about it if you like. Basically, it's up to you. Most of the people who go over to teach, go with the basic requirements. If you do decide you want to better prepare yourself for the classroom and spend money on one of the above mentioned courses, just make sure it's an accredited course (100 hours + 6 hours practicum). In Canada, you can check TESLCanada.org for more information. For other countries, you could probably ask at TESLCanada.org and they should be able to tell you. If I apply to work with your agency, can I apply elsewhere too?Sure, you can do anything you want. Applying with us just opens up more opportunity choices for YOU! You are not obligated to anyone until you've signed a contract with a school. Do I have to pay a fee to apply? No fees, nadda, nothing. You should NEVER have to pay a fee. We are hired by the schools in Korea to find you, introduce you to them, and work with you on everything from getting your documents together and applying for your visa to arranging your airline tickets and pick-up in Korea to supporting you professionally throughout your contract term. They just don't always have the time to do this as they have a business to run, and this is our business. How does using a recruiter benefit me?It can make your life a whole lot easier! Searching for the right job, arranging everything yourself, and trying to correspond with someone in a completely different time zone can cause stress, anxiety, and heart failure (ok, so the last one's a bit extreme). Any school we represent MUST go through a very thorough screening process with us before we will consider representation. We contact current and previous teachers at the school, and whenever possible, we have a Go East representative visit the school to verify the information the school has sent us. Their reputation affects our reputation, so if ever we find that a school doesn't live up to our standards, we will terminate our relationship with them. We also provide our professional support as well as our experience and resources to you entirely! So, let us do the brunt of the work! It's our business, we're good at it, and it's FREE! Can I just apply for a job with the schools directly?Yes and No. Some schools choose to go through recruiters and some don't. Running a school in Korea is quite a lot of work as it is, so they often prefer to hire a recruiting company to introduce them to teacher candidates as they just don't have the time to do all the correspondence and preparation themselves. Finding the website of a school, in English, can sometimes prove daunting as well. If you know someone who is working in Korea already, you can definitely try to gain employment through them. It's often a good idea to go through someone you know who is already employed at that school especially if they are a good friend. Can I speak to someone currently at the school to ask them questions?Definitely! We will always provide the contact information of current teachers working at the school to our prospective teachers. On occasion, the director of the school will wish to speak with you personally as well. We want you to be comfortable in your decision to work in Korea so we will do everything we can to help put you at ease in your decision making. I have a criminal background check from my old job. Will this work?Your criminal background check must be no more than six month old when applying for your visa. It also has to be notarised and then apostilled on the original document (or confirmed at the embassy for Canadians only). You can get a criminal background check from your local police. Do I need to send my original degree certificate, or can I send a photocopy? We recommend sending the original always. You will get it back when you arrive in Korea. You will also have to have your degree certificate notarised and apostilled (on a copy, not on the original) before you send it. What type of criminal background check do I need to get? There are different titles of these for each country. You need a certified check that includes a search for crimes against children: Canada - Certified Criminal Background Check (with Vulnerable Sector Search) USA - Certified Criminal Background Check (with Name Background Search or Name Background Search with fingerprints) UK - Subject Access Report (Basic Disclosure) Ireland - Police Certificate of Character (with a Sex Offender Registry Search) Australia - National Police Clearance Certificate New Zealand - A Copy of Your Conviction Records South Africa - Police Clearance Certificate Which items need to be notarised and legalised (apostilled) before I send them? You'll need to have your criminal background check notarised and apostilled on the original document. Your degree certificate (diploma) will have to be notarised and apostilled on a photocopy and sent along with the original.
